The Role of the ‘key person’ 

Key person responsibilities:
It is a requirement that a ‘key person’ should be allocated to a child prior to the child starting at nursery so they are involved in all transition activities before the child begins attending the setting.  

Key person

  • Is a secure base 
  • Nurtures the child 
  • Supports the child and family 
  • Safeguards the child 
  • Provides for their additional needs 
  • Advocates for the child 

Working with the families enables the ‘key person’ to: 

  • Know parents/carers and home life- support them- feed back to parents/carers 
  • Know the family composition- EAL- Equalities- emotional needs- friendships- significant events/issues-background- learning style/schemas 
  • Know their community and advocates 
  • Build relationships with the child and parents/carers 
  • Give emotional support to both the child and parents/carers 
  • Attend meetings, when practical, to support the child
